I have.... a THEORY!
So I just watched yesterday's House (the season finale).
I'm going with House being schizophrenic, or rather that he's exhibiting schizophrenic symptoms, because if it's all just the vicodin my theory is useless.
I think House has celiac disease!
Celiac disease is a chronic disease in which there is a characteristic though not specific mucosal lesion of the small intestine that impairs nutrient absorption by involved bowel and prompt improvement of nutrient absorption and improvement of the characteristic intestinal mucosal lesion on withdrawal of wheat gliadin (the toxic alcohol-soluble gluten fractions) and the equivalent barley, rye, and oat prolamins from the diet.*
People with a genetic predisposition to celiac disease will not necessarily have it until it is triggered, often by a really stressful event such as surgery or divorce. Or the death of a friend/colleague.
Once it is active, it can have all sorts of crazy effects. Most of my family and I have it. If we eat gluten, we get really depressed. But, and this is the relevant part, it can cause/mimic schizophrenia.
In a remarkable case study3, physicians used SPECT to demonstrate reduced circulation to the left frontal region of the brain in a 33-year-old patient with schizophrenia. The patient had presented with symptoms suggestive of celiac disease, and intestinal biopsy confirmed typical findings. The patient was started on a gluten-free diet, which resulted in a normalization of the SPECT findings and a disappearance of psychiatric symptoms.**
So! Kutner died, House gets stressed out, House gets celiac disease, House starts hallucinating. Now he just has to stick to a strict gluten free diet, and he'll be fine. And he'll bitch about gluten free food in every other episode, and everyone who has celiac disease or who knows someone with it will be able to relate.
On the other hand, I'll still be in a gluten craving mood. Damn it.
